Above the shops is a setback, and then the 31-story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosenycapts.com\/For-Sale-Apartments\/Georgetown-Plaza.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Georgetown Plaza<\/a> tower, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emporis.com\/building\/georgetownplazaapartments-newyorkcity-ny-usa\" target=\"_blank\">built in 1965<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the same block, right next to where I took the picture above, the shops continue with the venerable &#8220;Cozy Soup &#8216;n&#8217; Burger&#8221; diner, a liquor store and the Delion Deli.  Above them is the 35-story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alginny.com\/index.php?pagename=properties&#038;detailid=33\" target=\"_blank\">Hilary Gardens<\/a> tower, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emporis.com\/building\/hilarygardens-newyorkcity-ny-usa\" target=\"_blank\">built in 1972<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-02-23hilary.41.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-02-23hilary.41-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Hilary Gardens and Georgetown Plaza\" width=\"384\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-02-23hilary.41-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-02-23hilary.41-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-02-23hilary.41.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not <a href=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/?p=183\">classic Greenwich Village urbanism<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/?p=214\">a quiet residential street<\/a>, but it&#8217;s easy to walk and provides a stimulating visual environment.  It fits in so well with the surrounding ground-floor retail that I only recently noticed that the buildings were postwar towers.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast this with the <a href=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/?p=192\">boring vegetation<\/a> along Washington Square Village, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/grieve-smith.com\/ftn\/?p=205\">pointless lawn<\/a> of Silver Towers.<\/p>\n<p>If the Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation really wanted to &#8220;protect the character of our neighborhood,&#8221; they would ask NYU to build retail out to meet the sidewalks of Third, Bleecker and especially Houston Street.
